Jack

Jack was nervous. He was standing on the ridgeline above the minotaur city. He was about to make a portal circle back to Kusharna. He was having trouble because he was imagining an army coming in after him and attacking the settlement.

“They have been preparing, Jack. It won’t be your fault. Trust them,” Willmarth said. “Besides we have dragons now!”

Jack laughed. That was right. He had forgotten about the dragons. Any army coming to Kusharna would be hard pressed to deal with the high mana, the many mages and warriors and now dragons.

How’s the hunting in Kusharna? Dakota messaged to Jack.

Willmarth answered. “The fishing is excellent at the lake.”

Jack looked from Willmarth to Dakota. “How does this work? Dakota messaged me but Willmarth, you answered.”

Willmarth sniffed. “I am powerful and wise, as is Dakota. We can communicate with each other as well as through you. Saves a lot of time. I should think,” Willmarth added.

“OK, not sure how this will work but just make sure you two stay out of trouble.”

Both Willmarth and Dakota laughed.

“Oh that’s rich, Jack. You of all people are telling us to stay out of trouble,” Willmarth said between chuckles.

Jack lifted one shoulder. “You know what I mean, don’t go eating Elon’s creatures or scaring people.”

Willmarth and Dakota were still laughing when Jack made the portal circle and stepped out onto the ridge above Kusharna.

“That’s weird. I made the portal to the Inn,” Jack said as he closed the circle behind him.

“They must have the portal disruptor up and running,” Willmarth said casually. “I’m off to see Ana and the others. Welcome home, Jack. Have fun exploring, Dakota.”

Jack watched as Willmarth flew up the mountain. He saw that there was a small black dragon sitting on a perch outside a new hole in the mountain. The other dragons must be out hunting or in the lair, Jack thought. He hadn’t seen dragons since they had rescued the teachers from the Darkthorn Academy prison. Jack spent a few moments watching the dragon.

Impressive creatures, Dakota commented.

“Did you see dragons on the Isle of Maga?” Jack asked.

No, but Cassiopeia has told me about them, Dakota remarked.

Jack nodded and started walking down the hill. The hippos were coming towards them and Jack wasn’t sure how Dakota or the hippos would interact.

“The hippos are attracted to magic use. They have been trained by my half-brother to act as guards for our settlement. They are given the scent of anyone who lives here so they don’t attack our own people. Please don’t eat them, my brother is very attached to them.”

Jack glanced at the jaguar to make sure he was listening. His nostrils were flared and his eyes were wide, taking in the new environment. Jack noted the new wall. It encompassed the settlement and the entrance to the mine. Jack was impressed by the design and height. A lot of work had been done since he had last been to Kusharna.

Jack and Dakota both took a deep breath of the air. It smelt different from the jungle and it was quiet.
